Now you see them, now you don't..the miracle of the virtual

After reading this
http://matadornetwork.com/sports/struggling-soccer-team-installs-virtual-fans,
as well as the article
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703376504575492150516523976.html
on THE METs ventures into satellite transmissions, sirius radio, downloadable (is that a new word?) opera onto itunes, computers, etc. one Has to get that sinking feeling that we need NEVER step outside our 'cozy caves' to experience and enjoy anything?
No need to TALK to people where there is, Facebook, Twitter, work from home, email. Could it maybe mean that over generations tongues will atrophy, legs too, fingers lengthen so touching the screen " virtual keyboard"becomes easier from a reclining position...one must be comfortable when watching, opera, plays, movies, games :-).
Robots will scurry round with drinks and food , because that maggoty thing on a couch that just reaches out to 'touch something' will have little need for moving about.

So how about that?
Robotic Hockey, or Soccer or Theater and Opera in front of virtual fans?
Horrors! Nightmares! Omens!
Back to the future?
 :)  or better yet :(

There certainly is a case to be made that "virtual fans" represent an improvement over "real fans".

First, many of today's real fans often fail the knowledge 101 test in the sport they elect to follow and lack the initiative to learn what they need to know to understand the dynamics of their sport. At least, Forrest Gump evolved to understand the dynamics of the SHRIMP business.

Second, many of today's real fans exhibit less-than-civilized behavior while entering, attending or leaving their favorite sport's venue. Unfortunately, many athletes are not too far behind this rapidly-declining behavioral standard.

Third, venue attendance is declining in many sports venues (football excepted), as Free and Cable TV coverage grows, giving sports owners and venue managers the opportunity to "experiment" with alternative settings. The reader refer tp the 9/22 WSJ Personal Section Article: Trieste, Italy (population 200,000 on the Adriatic Sea) soccer matches which now feature "virtual fan" PVC screens, drapped over entire sections of a 32,000 seat stadium for the sole purpose of giving TV viewers the impression of a "full house", when fewer than 8,000 fans are actually present.

As Avatars and Robots replace humans in many activities over the next 25 years, one can only imagine the consequences.
