Split personality. Liking the arts, especially opera, and hockey and Los Toros. I know, I know THAT one is non pc currently. But I can't help it saw some in Spain and got hooked, but good. But on the other hand right now opera and hockey are in the forefront!

Abbotsford turnes 'caliente' in San Antonio

What an exciting afternoon game in SA with a green hued audience of about 7,000!
 Another save by Brust
Abbotsford with a revitalized Barry Brust in goal and a better coordinated defense dominated the 1. period with 15 SOGs  and 2 power play goals. As well as a fight a few minutes into it!
For Kolanos fans it will be good to know that he had two assists.
 Face Off

Brust deflects puck but not Rampage player ;-)

Brust sprawls to save
For Barry Brust fans, let me just say he was in top form, making some truly unorthodox saves, one during the Shoot Out when he went wayyyy out and successfully deflected the oncoming Rampage player's puck. The final Rampage player during the shoot out either lost his nerve a) seeing how Brust deflected all previous shots or maybe b) he lost control of the puck which just gently drifted onto Brust's stick and stopped there ;-)!

Ah, well t'was the afternoon of the Heat. The game was played fast, aggressively with seemingly no holds barred - vide 3 solid fights, which appeared to me went the Rampage way!

To sum it up, Heat went hotly into the the First, simmered in the Second, but flamed up again in the Third resulting in 4 goals, 2 SOGs in OT and finally scored  2 goals in SO.
Rampage had a slack First with no goal, revved it up in the 2. with 1 goal and hit their stride in 3. with 3 goals almost like .... bang bang bang!
AHHHH that stretch feels good !

Yippee, saved! And what a defense mob!
Doc  Grumet Morris held his own during regulation and OT but was less than stellar in the SO.

The 3 Stars of the game 1. Walter, and 2. Brust of the Heat with 3. Combs (2 goals) for SA.

Opera and Hockey

well, sort of.
On Saturday we held the Opera in the Heights "potluck' and a nice time was had by all with lots of laughs, hugs with old favorites and happy getting to know you for newcomers singing in Anna Bolena.

Yesterday afternoon Better Half and I listened, at times rather spellbound, to 8 finalists in the Regional Competition for a spot to compete in the Nationals at the Metropolitan Operas Young artists program later this spring.
4 of the finalists represented the HGO Opera Studio. And who were enthusiastically supported by a busload of Houston buddies and opera lovers, plus several who drove their own cars (as we did).
But only one made it. Coloratura Soprano Lauren Snouffer shared first place with the more  dramatic soprano Annamarie Zmolek.
The sole tenor (HGO Studio)  of the 8 finalists, who seemed to have enchanted the audience of opera cognoscenti and just opera lovers, did not get even a mention. Even though his selection was unusual and not only sung beautifully but who also showed great stage presence!
Other than of course, that all 8 finalists were lauded as having big talents with huge promise!
It doesn't matter. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

Then on to the Ranch for a relaxing night to be ready for tonight's Rampage versus Abbotsford Heat contest.  Rampage 2 : Heat 1.
Of which I shall post briefly..
with photos (albeit with just a little point and shot of less than 3 inch long lens which falls within the allowed length for non-media or professional picture takers) to be posted after returning to my desk top.
This little net book is incapable to receive uploads..

The Rampage peppered Danny Taylor of HEAT with 31 shots 28 of which he saved.
Grumet Morris, who has grown since I saw him first time, stopped 25 of 26 and even had a spectacular belly flop kinda save...rather unexpected and not seen before from this net minder.

Amazingly, Kolanos was on the ice continuously or so it sure seemed, but had ONLY 4 sogs.
While his teammate Nigerian born (?) speedy 'Gonzalez' Akim Aliu had 5, one the only goal for the Heat.

So, with this second in row loss by Heat during a 3 on 3 weekend (they must have been tired, but sure did not look it) and the loss by Texas to Rockford, Aeros are again in 2. place with 51  points and equal number games (40) played to OKC 53 and  3. placed Heat 51.

Well,  back to the game.
The first period was exciting! Red (jerseys) Heat taking on the 'Caliente' Rampage.
Lots of fast paced skating, good to great passing, energetic forechecking and hot defense.
One goal each. By Wright for Rampage, and Aliu for Heat.

The second was much less that. Seemed a bit 'blah' lacking some of that oomph that excites fans (4180 at the ATT).
As incredible as it sounds both teams had huge opportunities to score but were stopped effectively by both goalies. Only Ex- Aeros Mark Cullen was able to stuff one in on a rebound off his stick in the rather exciting 3. period.

Throughout I was surprised how few passes were sent Krys Kolanos' way by his team mates.
And equally surprised by the speed and accuracy exhibited by Akim Aliu!
Rampage players appeared to take KK's presence on the ice personally and made hampering him from scoring a priority. Just saying :-).

Of course died-in-the-wool Rampage fans may not agree.

The 2 Refs and their 2 aides, blew many whistles, but only 8 penalties.
3 on Rampage - no PP goal for Heat. 5 on Heat and one of that became one goal for Rampage!
It seemed to me that there were many 'commercial breaks' which halted the flow of the game which then took awhile to be resumed.
But it was overall a good game, especially nice to see 2 familiar faces behind the bench of the Heat! Ward and Strand.
For photos... come visit  here Tuesday late night or Wednesday morning!
Because tomorrow we will be wine tasting (and buying-lol).
And shopping at Tanger Outlets  !!!! on the way ho on a predicted to be splendid sunny warm day.

It was not unexpected

Abbortsford Heat burn Aeros.
Abbortsford 5 vs Aeros 3. Even a last ditch effort could not save Aeros tonight.
Another loss to a better team.
And guess what?
Former crowd pleaser Krys Kolanos almost did it again.
But had to contend himself with only 2 goals, 1 assist and two penalties, LOL.
Kolanos on the Warpath
At first I was pleasantly surprised to see an aggressive Aeros team skate out shooting 11 to the Heat's 4 one of which was an unassisted Goal Nr. 1 By KK.
Heat defense present and accounted for
Alas THAT energy level subside mightily in the second period in which 7 SoG for the Aeros got them one goal by McIntyre, Fontaine, Cuma.
Kolanos got his 2nd Goal and Nemisz number 3 of 14 SoG for .
Hackett was a busy guy that time

Third Period saw a newly energized team with 2 goals  one by Foucault, Fontaine, Genoway
and with seconds to spare another by Wellman, Taffe and Genoway. (14 Sogs)
Great reaction by fans.. on feet but alas..Rheault got an empty netter (2.goal for him)
The Heat managed only 4 SoGs in the Third.
Both teams had 2 PP goals each.
Battling for the Puck

Irving stops yet another one

Three Sticks - One Puck... 1 goal
All snapshots above by artandhockey
It was not a good night..
the Heat was too strong and aggressive, great forechecking, great blocking,
keeping it in the Aeros zone much too often.
Although some individual Aeros Players did good work:
Genoway, Foucault, Fontaine, Wellman, Rau had some marvellous steals.
Seems Peters was sorely missed at face offs, which more often than not went the Heat Way.
Good Night under a full moon:

I lied...

I said I wouldn't... but here I am.
Just can't leave it be-so grin and bear it!
AEROS won a second game!
1.  in pre-season vs. Stars and  1. in regular Season vs OKC Barons.
I did not see it - only heard the voice of the Aeros with explanatory comments by Brandon Rogers!
But t'was exciting nevertheless.
It sounded like "Wundergoalie" Hackett (30 saves) was indeed wunderbar!  Nr 2*
"Avalanche" Kalus with 2 goals, 1 assist and Nr. 1 * surprised, probably even himself  :).
Broda
Newbie Joel ("Joyeux") Broda also had 2 goals  Nr. 3*
Di Salvatore ("Speedy Jon") had a goal (PP goal at that-might that become his speciality) and 1 assist,
"The Scrapper" Daoust had 3 assists, and "Frisky" Gillies also scored.
Well, per Russo, it is now 100% that "Dimples" Khudobin,
Kassian, the "Kassassinator", Bagnall ("Bagman")
and now also Casey Wellman - below he scores his first NHL goal

are being sent South to lovely Houston where Flip Flops reign and the sun shines on the TC!  And  pools beckon to hardy hockey players from up North, after all 55 - 65 degree water temperature is just a balmy one for them :-)!
On the other hand, we hear that Zingoni ("Zippy") was an injured scratch at OKC- (deja vu?); as was Tyler Cuma, but we knew that already!
Rogers ("The Rock") was a healthy scratch and ablye to assist Joe O'Donnell.

And as Better Half and I have and will follow Mathieu Beaudoin (26) and Matt Climie, I am happy to report that Nr. 26 Rampage was Nr. 1 * (2 goals and 2 assists) in his first game with the Rampage vs. Chicago Wolves. Sure looks like Texas IS good for Mathieu B..whether skating as Nr. 25 (Aeros) or
Nr. 26 (Stars and now Rampage).
Barry Brust and Corey Locke (2 goals in 2. game-, 1 assist in 1.game-) are with Binghampton Senators and doing reasonably well or so I hear from Ms.C. Mitch Love skates for the Shreveport-Bossier City NJMudbugs and, I'm sure, will enchant those fans with his histrionics when fighting to heat up team and fans alike!
While Krys Kolanos was released by The NJ Devils even though in pre-season he score the one goal! Go figure! And here we were ready to watch him as a Devil vs The Lightening on our planned trip to Florida..well, we will still attend, Kolanos or not.. hockey is hockey!
Grabner was traded by the Panthers, but Vanek, the other "Austrian" player I follow, is still with the Sabres!
