It is NOT New Years YET

until the Wiener Philharmoniker have played their annual New Year's Concert at 11 AM in the Wiener Musikvereinsaal on January 1.
And it was just aired on PBS...LOVELY, oh, so lovely.
This year's conductor, chosen by the musician, was George Pretre and he did bring some fresh sounds to it.. Offenbach and a Danish Composer, the rest was.... STRAUSS, father, and sons!
Among the pieces, quadrille, polkas, waltzes, accompanied by film from the Museum of Art, Danube river views from its spring in Donaueschingen, Germany all the way to its surging into the black Sea in Rumania. Ballet dancers, Demels Patisserie (with recipes... ;-) oh my God, those chocolate creations.... and how they do it....even just looking at it I feel I've died and gone to heaven.

Wiener Bonbon waltz

with ...Champagne Polka

, what else.

And so the Year has finally started - for me ( Rudolfsheimerkirche-that is the church whose bells rang every 15 minutes when I grew up there) - and many Austrians by birth, at heart, or choice.
Then... Die Blaue Donau - Blue Danube - waltzer and tears spring into eyes of all Austrians. And most of us jump up and dance as long as we can ;-D! Loving it all. It is the 'unofficial' anthem.
And of course, the end is always Father Strauss' Radetzky Marsch
accompanied by the enthusiastically clapping hands of the audience.

And tears spring into eyes when hearing that in Milwaukee, the Aeros - surprise, surprise got 6 goals..yes 6 goals.

1. Rau=WOW, with The Scrapper and Handy Andy, 2. Sifers (Sifers!) with Earl, The Pearl and BWP Falk, 3. Irms with Almond Joy, 4. The Streak with Ironman and Speedy Jon, 5. Almod Joy and Kassian (Kassian!), and 6. Speedy Jon with The Scrapper and The Streak. Maybe Not fighting so much, not getting as many penalties....ONLY 5... Brusty's was for diving? No not that kind of diving... but enjoy the views, nevertheless LOL.

Well, well, well.. the WHOLE team turned out to score, what? And Brusty in goal... Hockey Gods must've heard all our prayers...with Ms. C's foremost to have THAT kinda game !!! Next game in Houston January 3....GO AEROS... AGAIN, PLEASE!

The annual New Year's Concert in Vienna (with the concluding Radetzky March) remains a bellwether of hope and optimism for the civilized world.

Final votes have been counted for the 2009 Person(s) of the Year (in order): (1) Ayn Rand, (2) the American People, and (3) the US armed forces.

Josef Wenzel Graf Radetzky von Radetz died January 8, 1858 at 91 (almost 152 years ago). He was named Viceroy of Lombardy and was known even there (for an enemy) as a fair ruler.
An anecdote coursed around, when meeting the man responsible for one of the most significant checks in the 1848 campaign, General Cesare Launier, shaking his hand, and congratulating him on getting "a bunch of kids" (much of Launier's command was made up of volunteer university students) to fight so hard that Radetzky and his men seriously thought they were facing crack professional Sardinian troops. Maybe the spirit of 'Papa Radetzky' as he was known by his troops, hoovered over the Aeros in Milwaukee? Just kidding.
