Casey Wellborn, the California boy, made history.
He got three goals in the First Period.. a natural hat trick.
He wasn 't done yet however, a 4th goal on one of the very few power plays in this game made it a so-called 'Texas hat trick'!
Chad Rau (still wearing the cage) assisted 3 times.
Casey Wellman |
First Wellman Goal - Rah Rah Rah with Rau-Wow and Cuma |
Another Goal |
A scuffle breaks out |
Kassian Victorious-both sit 5 minutes for fighting |
Super save by Kudobin in the last few minutes |
After the save..Daoust dis-entangles himself from Khudobin :-) |
Fallon re-places Climie, who skates out, pouting and slamming his stick |
Cuma, Earl, Prosser, Noreau, Daoust and Di Salvatore each got one assist.
Fast, aggressive, very physical game.
The Aeros seemed NEW.
Systems in place, systems working, passing very passable, stick on puck 85-90 % of time, puck steals at last minute, 7 or was 6 defenders on ice..seems to work.
Rampage seemed stunned by early "just let me slap 'em in" goals in the First.
Then rev'ed it up, but to no avail, they still only had 3 goals,
thanks to Khudobin's super save late in the 3rd!
Referee Ryan Hersey - he must be new to the game!?
He just let the boys play.
Called VERY few penalties, which worked to the Aeros advantage,
since Rampage has/had (?) a great power play game.
To our sorrow, Rampage Nr. 26 was
Aeros of note in this really amazing game:
- WELLMAN, Wellman, Wellman, Wellman (lol).
- Anton Khudobin..the second goal by Rampage was unavoidable!
only to have McClean sneak it past OVER his shoulder and raised hand!
- Rau-Wow-almost had a break away goal!
- Mc Bride, Buck, Earl, Cuma. Prosser.
Can they keep it up during the next away games?
At Christmas time, no less?
Perhaps, sending some less than effective players Broda, Fraser(?), Zingoni)
to the minors shook up the rest of guys, a bit or even more than a bit?
Most amusing but heart warming moment:
The Scrapper Daoust, true to his pet name, took on a bigger opponent, fearlessly,
at least twice that I caught!
The other 'scrapper' McBride was quick on the draw (that is snatching the puck away)..
kinda glad he was signed for good!
All in all: a great exciting, fast paced, physically well played game.
And, IMHO, having refs that do not call many penalties, makes the game flow swiftly...too swiftly, almost.
Before we knew it, it was finished!
Apropos Khudobin, will he be called to skate for his country in the up coming 2011 Asiatic Games in Khazakstan?
Kalus skated during warm up, but - as we understand - was scratched due to an injury (minor we hope) as was Palmer. Lampman was ahealthy scratch, and Peters, we were told went ot the NHL!
GO AEROS.

I really enjoy reading your entertaining posts on Aeros and other hockey events, enhanced by a very interesting photo gallery.
The Aeros win over the Rampage was a game to remember. In particular, the image (and finesse) of Wellman's 4th goal will be etched in the minds of Aeros fans for a very long time.
Wellman's stunning performance (only the third such feat in Aeros history) may remind serious hockey fans of particular "hat-trick events" of the distant and most recent past:
. 1993-Mario Lemieux's "quadrille" v. Philadelphia: the only NHL player ever to score a 5-5 goal, PP goal, short-handed goal, penalty shot, and empty-net goal in a single game.
. 2009-Corey Locke's 4-goal "texas hat-trick" (as it was called at the time) in the AHL all-star contest.
. 2010-Sidney Crosby's 3-goal hat-trick(s) in successive Penguin home ice games on 11/27 and 12/2.
To be sure, Coach Yeo has brought some of the Pens' winning culture (epitomized by Mr. Crosby) to the Aeros organization and young icehawks (like Mr. Wellman) with extraordinary talent.
Finally, a bit of trivia.....apparently, there have been no recorded natural "short-handed" hat-tricks in the NHL, although a handful in the ECHL and Collegiate ranks.
Go Aeros!!!
And not to forget former Aeros Mathieu Beaudoin's hat trick last season in an away game..
Thanks for reading. Happy you get some laughs (and tears at times) from it!
